BLUE CHANTEUSE

BLUE CHANTEUSE

This image of a young and talented singer feels like an old album cover to me, with deep and rich blues, pink lips, and the metallic highlights of a vintage microphone.

BEACH TRIO

BEACH TRIO

This photo was taken on Ogunquit Beach in southern Maine. I loved the (near) silhouettes of the three girls standing in the ocean water. That water is always cold, so I can’t blame them for venturing in further! I also liked the tonality of the image - the mix of soft grays and pale blues, a look that I find very tranquil.

CONCENTRATION

CONCENTRATION

I love the dark tones and shadows in this image of a local violinist. As a backdrop, they make the warm, rich wood tones of the instrument really pop off the page. The shadows and highlights on the musician’s face add some emotional complexity to the image as well.

CONFRONTATION

CONFRONTATION

An odd image caught on the streets of San Francisco. I find it mildly disturbing - maybe it’s the lopsided haircut or out of date dress of the older man in the foreground, or the somewhat confrontational stare of the man in the background. Is he looking at me? Or the older man? The car adds a feeling of motion and, along with the street sign, perhaps some drama?

LIFEGUARDS

LIFEGUARDS

These (unposed) lifeguards were carefully watching a colleague swimming in the distance. This is clearly an image about symmetry - the five lifeguards hold a similar stance, with the exception of the man in the middle; the two bright yellow rescue boards flank and enclose the grouping, and provide a nice complement to the deep blue sky. Dark black wetsuits provide some protection against the frigid water.

WORKSHOP

WORKSHOP

This potter was deep in focus and hard at work in a workshop overrun with bowls, vases, plates and other containers. So many vessels, in fact, that the shelves behind him look like they could collapse at any second.

INTO THE LIGHT

INTO THE LIGHT

A mysterious image - the silhouettes of two boys, venturing deeper into the water and towards an evocative light shining through the clouds. Many questions.

FISHERMAN'S END

FISHERMAN'S END

I don’t know whether it was a productive day for this fisherman or not, but he was out until sunset. My reward was the way he was framed in silhouette against the red-orange sky and the sinking sun.

1-2-3...

1-2-3...

This trio (siblings?) was having a grand time, jumping from the pier on Peaks Island, off the coast of Maine. A line had formed behind them as other kids waited their turn. But what I love about the image is how the action is frozen, and the positions of the three subjects - boys angled outwards, and the girl dead center with arms outstretched.

BOCCE

BOCCE

Some intense bocce going on at this beach, and you have to admit that this gentleman has excellent form! Supposedly bocce was played as far back as the Roman Empire, and eventually brought to the rest of the world by Italian immigrants.

ADORATION

ADORATION

An impromptu image taken of a mother and her child. To me, it captures a range of powerful emotions, from simple love and attachment, to the powerful connections that mothers have with their daughters.

CONTEMPLATION

CONTEMPLATION

An unknown woman climbs the cliffs and gazes off into the ocean in this image. Is she saying goodbye to a loved one? Enjoying the view? Or just bolstering her inner peace? Hard to say, but images that are open to interpretation are always very interesting.

THE TROUBADOR

THE TROUBADOR

A vibrant and curious shot of a stylish musician playing in - where else? - the ocean. The colors here are brilliant, and I love how the light washes over the individual, highlighting the textures of his clothing.
